99 races later, Zippy Chippy still in hunt

Horse Racing

Zippy Chippy, the 13-year-old gelding based in upstate New York, will try to win for the first time today on his 100th try.

The lovable loser, as he's been called, will try to break his string of 99 straight losses at the Northampton Fair in Massachusetts. He raced there six days ago and finished seventh, beating only an 84-1 shot who did not finish.

Zippy Chippy has become something of a celebrity and a draw for promotions. He has raced minor league baseball players and harness horses - and beaten them, on occasion. But he has yet to beat thoroughbreds, finishing second eight times and third 12 times.
