Police identify man killed in shooting

Police identified Bashmir Banks, 25, yesterday as the victim of a fatal shooting Tuesday night in the 800 block of W. Fayette St.

Officers who responded to the initial report of the shooting found only a crashed car, said Detective Donny Moses, a police spokesman. They learned that a shooting victim had walked into the emergency room at nearby Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police later determined that Banks - who once lived in the 2800 block of Claybrook Drive - was driving with a friend along Fayette and stopped to talk to a woman, Moses said.

A man came up and began arguing with them, and another man then fired several shots at Banks, police said.

Banks got back into the car with his friend and tried to drive to the hospital, but he lost consciousness and crashed into a parked Ford Escort, Moses said. The victim's friend then drove him to the hospital.

Banks was pronounced dead about 10:10 p.m., Moses said. Police are searching for the woman and the two men.
