Canoe ride will focus on reservoir's natural history

The Prettyboy Watershed Alliance is organizing a canoe jaunt on the Prettyboy Reservoir from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25.

The event will be an opportunity to learn more about the natural and human history of the reservoir and surrounding watershed, which extends from the Hampstead/Manchester area to southern York County, Pa., and into northwestern Baltimore County.

The watershed encompasses 79.4 square miles and has a population of 14,000.

The canoe jaunt will be led by Wally Vait, former owner of On the Fly in Monkton, who will discuss the history and natural systems of the reservoir, as well as ecosystems, biodiversity and wildlife habitat.

Participants must register by tomorrow. Canoes, paddles and life preservers will be provided. Participants should take a lunch.

County Humane Society to hold annual open house

The Humane Society of Carroll County will hold its annual open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the facility, 2517 Littlestown Pike.

Visitors can tour the facility. Pet adoptions will be available.
