The fall racing season is off and running

The weather is getting cooler. Vacation season is over. It is running time.

And there are plenty of weekend races for distance and recreational runners. So, between now and the Baltimore Marathon (Oct. 16) think about getting out the sneakers and hitting the pavement.

St. Joseph Medical Center Run to Remember

The race is dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Proceeds are donated to the Baltimore City Police Department and the Baltimore City Fire Department.

When: Saturday; race-day registration is at 7 a.m.; the race starts at 8:45 a.m.

Where: Starts at the Baltimore Police Headquarters, 601 E. Fayette St.

Distance: 5 kilometers. There is also a one-mile walk.

Cost: $30 before race, $35 race day

Sunrise Y5K Race and Fun Walk

Proceeds from the race will help fund scholarships for child-care programs and summer camps at the Western Family YMCA.

When: Sunday; race-day registration is 6:45 a.m.-7:45 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m.

Where: Bloomsbury Community Center, 106 Bloomsbury Ave. Catonsville.

Distance: 5 kilometers

John R. Petruccelli Memorial Run

In 1981, John R. Petruccelli, then a senior at St. Mary's College, was hit and killed by a drunken driver while riding his bike. This run is dedicated to his memory.

When: Sept. 18. Race-day registration is 7 a.m.-7:45 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m.

Where: The waterfront of St. Mary's College of Maryland, 18952 E. Fisher Road, St. Mary's City.

Distance: 5 kilometers.

Cost: Registration before Sept. 15 is $15 for St. Mary's students and $20 for other runners. After that, it's $25.

Charm City Run

This 10-mile run sponsored by the running shop is limited to 500 runners.

When: Sept. 18. Race starts at 8 a.m.

Where: Charm City Run, 2045 York Road, Timonium.

Distance: 10 miles (expect a few hills).

Cost: Registration is $30 through Sept. 17 and $35 on race day if space is available.

Jones Falls Express Run Off

The run is part of the Jones Falls Valley Celebration. Proceeds from the registration fees will go toward restoring the Jones Falls Valley watershed.

When: Sept. 19. The race starts at 8 a.m. There is no race-day registration.

Where: The race starts at the end of the Cold Spring Lane overpass at Falls Road.

Distance: 5 miles.

Cost: Registration is $20 today and tomorrow; after that it is $25.

Columbia Metric Marathon and 5K

The run is 26.2 kilometers - a number marathoners will find familiar. This translates into 16.2 miles.

When: Oct. 3. Race-day registration is 6 a.m.-8 a.m. The race starts at 8:15 a.m.

Starts from: Little Patuxent Parkway between The Mall in Columbia and the Columbia lakefront.

Distance: 16.2 miles.

Cost: Registration for the metric marathon is $25 by Sept. 30. After that date it is $27, and $30 on race day. Registration for the 5-kilometer walk is $20 to Sept. 30, $22 after that and $25 on race day.

Race for the Cure

Funds from the race benefit breast cancer research and early-detection programs in Maryland.

When: Oct. 9. Race-day registration is at 6 a.m. At 6:45 a.m., a photograph of the participants who have survived breast cancer is taken. The race begins at 8:45 a.m.

Where: M&T Bank Stadium. Tents and activities will be in lots B and C. The race starts on Russell Street.

Distance: 5 kilometers.

Cost: Registration is $30. Runners are encouraged to obtain sponsorship. Forms are available online.

The Under Armour Baltimore Marathon

There will also be a half-marathon and a 5-kilometer fun race.

When: Oct. 16. The race starts at 8 a.m.

Where: The start line is at Paca and Pratt streets.

Distance: The marathon is 26.2 miles. The half-marathon is 13 miles.

Cost: Registration for the marathon is $80 to Sept. 30. After that, it costs $90. Registration for the half marathon is $60 to Sept. 30 and $70 after that.
