Child hurt in fall from rear door of school bus

Old Court Middle pupil in critical condition

An Old Court Middle School pupil was in critical condition after falling from the rear emergency door of a school bus yesterday afternoon in Windsor Mill, Baltimore County police said.

The 12-year-old boy's name was not released, but police said he was being treated at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Police and school system officials said last night that they were investigating what led to the pupil's fall.

Police would say only that the door opened as the bus was moving. Baltimore County public schools spokesman Charles A. Herndon said last night that the system was investigating whether the door opened as a result of children misbehaving.

The bus was making its way along the 3700 block of Coronado Road near Kenbridge Road, a residential area where the speed limit is 25 mph, when the incident occurred about 3:10 p.m., police said.

Woodlawn Motor Coach operates the bus, officials said.
