Twins update

Minnesota (77-59) had won five straight games until falling to the Kansas City Royals yesterday, but the Twins are still in control of the American League Central with an 8 1/2 -game advantage. In the only meetings with the Orioles this season, the Twins took two of three games at Camden Yards in late July. Mulholland started the Orioles' lone victory in that series, giving up two runs in six innings and getting the no-decision. Since that July series, left-hander Santana has emerged as perhaps the league's top pitcher, carrying a 16-6 record and a 2.95 ERA, tied with the Oakland Athletics' Tim Hudson for the best in the AL. First baseman Justin Morneau, who was recalled from Triple-A Rochester after the All-Star break, had been on a tear, homering in consecutive games from Aug. 29-31 and on Friday and Saturday and hitting safely in 13 of the past 18 before going hitless in four at-bats with three strikeouts yesterday.
