Yankees update

A 22-0 loss to the Cleveland Indians, the worst defeat in Yankees history, provided another signal that this team is vulnerable as the playoffs approach. A 10 1/2 -game lead in the American League East on Aug. 16 is down to 3 1/2 games, and the tension is building. That could only happen in New York, considering the Yankees have won 32 of 51 games. Gary Sheffield continues to play despite shoulder and ankle injuries, and he's having a Most Valuable Player-caliber year. John Olerud has been a nice pickup with first baseman Jason Giambi still unavailable. New York, which has the second-best record in the majors, is 45-19 at home. The Yankees are 6-1 against the Orioles in the Bronx, with the only loss coming against Ponson on July 29.
