A Mount Airy teenager has been charged as an adult after a convenience store was robbed at gunpoint yesterday morning, state police said yesterday.

Steven Gregory McDaniel, 16, of the 500 block of Acorn Court, was arrested yesterday after a robbery at the High's store in the 100 block of Riverside Court in Mount Airy, authorities said.

At 8:38 a.m., two High's employees saw a white male enter the convenience store wearing a bandanna across his face and carrying a pistol and plastic bag, police said. Waving the pistol, the male demanded the money in the cash register and ran out of the store after the employees cooperated, police said.

No one was injured, police said.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police at the Westminster and Fredrick barracks, as well as deputies from the Carroll and Frederick County sheriff's offices, helped Mount Airy resident troopers with the investigation.

Police brought in a helicopter and canines to search for the suspect, who turned himself in at the High's store shortly after the search began.

Police said they found the bandanna and the stolen money on the suspect at the time of the arrest. A pistol was recovered near the store, police said.

The Carroll County state's attorney's office said it is charging McDaniel as an adult because of the nature of the crime.
