The death-penalty trial of Jamaal K. Abeokuto, a 24-year-old charged with killing his girlfriend's child, could conclude today, his defense attorney said.
Harford County prosecutors were set to call a witness this morning, and defense attorney Warren A. Brown said he will not call any witnesses.
The case will be decided by Baltimore County Circuit Judge Thomas J. Bollinger Sr. Abeokuto declined to have a jury hear his case. The trial was moved from Harford County because of pretrial publicity.
Abeokuto is accused of kidnapping 8-year-old Marciana Ringo, a Baltimore girl, slitting her throat and leaving her to die in a wooded area near Joppatowne. Her body was found Dec. 12, 2002.
