Katharine G. Matthews, 83, executive secretary

Katharine G. Matthews, a retired executive secretary and longtime Bolton Hill resident, died of complications from a stroke Aug. 20 at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital. She was 83.

She was born Katharine Gillet in Baltimore and lived in the 1400 block of Park Ave. and later the 1200 block of John St. from 1919 until 1999, when she moved to the Carlisle Apartments on University Parkway.

She attended Bryn Mawr School and had been an executive secretary at Union Memorial Hospital for 16 years when she retired in 1993.

She was married for 30 years to William Wall Matthews Jr., an advertising executive who died in 1977.

She was the longest-tenured parishioner and longtime office volunteer at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church in Bolton Hill, where a funeral Mass was offered Monday.

She is survived by a son, William Wall Matthews III of Columbia; and two grandsons.
