Athletics update

Oakland (70-53) has made its traditional second-half surge, winning 19 of 28 since July 24 to take a half-game lead in the AL West. That stretch includes a three-game sweep over the Orioles last week. As usual, the A's have done it with starting pitching. Hudson, who has the best ERA in the American League, pitched a complete-game five-hitter over the Orioles on Tuesday. Mulder leads the league in wins, while Harden is 5-0 in his past 10 starts. Designated hitter Erubiel Durazo hit three home runs at Camden Yards on Wednesday, and he hasn't cooled off much, going 11-for-23 on the A's road trip.
