Poscard from Athens

Athens Olympics 2004

August 21, 2004|By Candus Thomson | Candus Thomson,Sun Staff

A tap on the shoulder. "Please, put your arms out."

Uh-oh. Old parking ticket? The sign I appropriated from the 2002 Olympic Stadium parking lot? Eating souvlaki in a "No Souvlaki" zone?

The person behind me reaches in her holster and pulls out a spray bottle. "SPF 10 or 40?" asks Maria Kinkida, one of the volunteers at the Olympic whitewater venue, where the sun is unrelenting and the shade nonexistent.

A squirt on the left. A squirt on the right and one for my hands to rub on my face.

An unfurled umbrella to cover my head and neck. Room service was never this good.
