Fitness center given Planning Board OK

Ellicott City subdivision also receives approval

CLARIFICATION

An article in Friday's Howard County edition of The Sun about the Howard County Planning Board's approval of the Life Time Fitness facility planned for Columbia stated that the Owen Brown Village Board approved the facility. While the board said in a letter signed by Chairman Neil E. Dorsey that "all of our questions were answered satisfactorily," the board did not formally approve the plans.

The Howard County Planning Board approved preliminary plans yesterday for the proposed Life Time Fitness facility off Robert Fulton Drive in Columbia, and an eight-home subdivision on Old Columbia Pike in Ellicott City.

Board members were told the 100,000-square-foot private health club and gym, in the Rouse Co.-owned Gateway Industrial park near the southern end of the Snowden Square shopping center, will back to a townhouse development.

A berm and trees

But the homeowners will be shielded by a large earthen berm and trees. The Owen Brown Village Board approved the plan earlier in the week.

Builder Michael Pfau won board approval for his Trinity Homes plan to divide 4.39 acres now holding a one-story rancher into eight lots where seven detached homes selling for about $600,000 each are to be built.

The land is on the east side of Old Columbia Road, designated a county scenic road, and will use Sears House Court at the edge of the property, for access.

Away from road

The four houses nearest Old Columbia Pike will face away from the road, with a berm and trees obscuring the houses from the road, the board was told.

Construction will not begin quickly, however, because no housing allocations are available in the northeast county, and area elementary schools are too crowded under the county's Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance to allow building permits for more homes.
