Tip leads to bomb near Berlusconi villa

August 19, 2004|By NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE

ROME - Police defused a bomb early yesterday in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, where, hours earlier, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had entertained British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife, Cherie.

The small bomb was found next to a garbage bin a half-mile from Berlusconi's villa after a caller claiming to be from an extremist group based in Sardinia phoned a warning.
