School board to hold meetings on budget, capital improvements

The Howard County Board of Education will meet in closed session at 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The board will meet at 4 p.m. in the boardroom to begin the afternoon session of its regular meeting. The afternoon session and an evening session, which is to start at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum, during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process.

Sign-up in advance is preferred.

The board will hold a public work session on the fiscal 2006 capital budget and the fiscal 2007-2011 capital improvement program during the evening session.

Home educators group to hold discussions Aug. 30

Howard County Home Educators will meet at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

"Welcome to Homeschooling and How Do I Homeschool?" are to be discussed.

Experienced homeschooling parents will be available to answer questions.

New and interested families are welcome. Admission is free.

Columbia homeschool group offers information, support

The Columbia Homeschool Community will hold a Homeschool Information and Support Meeting from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 13 at the central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

School board advisory panel seeking at-large members

The Citizens Advisory Committee to the Board of Education, a group of citizens and PTA representatives that advises the elected school board, is seeking at-large members for the 2004-2005 school year.

The committee sponsors educational programming for members and offers an opportunity to study and comment on curriculum, education policy, redistricting and the education budget. The committee usually meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the board room at the Department of Education in Ellicott City.

At-large members serve a two-year term.

Resource center sponsoring workshops on child care

The Howard County Child Care Resource Center sponsors a continuing series of workshops for parents and child care and early childhood professionals.

"Designing and Implementing the Library Area," a workshop on creating a space in which children will want to read, will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. tomorrow. The cost is $20.

"Shaken Baby Syndrome," a workshop offered by the Howard County Health Department, will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 25. The cost is $10.

A hands-on workshop on "Portfolio Building" for an early-childhood business is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 28. The cost is $20.

The workshops will be held in Suite 380, 3300 North Ridge Road, Ellicott City.

Meetings slated for parents of children with ADHD

CHADD of Greater Baltimore sponsors a support group for parents of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Meetings are held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month at the Loyola College Graduate Center, 8890 McGaw Road, Columbia.
