Athletics update

Oakland sputtered last week after moving atop the American League West standings. The A's went 2-4 on their homestand against the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals, falling to 18-13 since the All-Star break. The Orioles have yet to face Oakland this season. Last year, the A's won the season series, 7-2. Former Oriole Arthur Rhodes has been on the disabled list with a strained back since July 2, but he pitched a scoreless inning in a Triple-A rehab start Saturday and is expected to be activated Wednesday for the series finale. In the meantime, Oakland has been using Octavio Dotel as its closer. Dotel, who was acquired from Houston, is 23-for-30 in save opportunities. Bobby Crosby, the rookie who has taken over for Miguel Tejada at shortstop, is riding a 3-for-34 slump.
