Harford man, 32, killed in head-on car collision

August 16, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A Harford County man was killed Saturday night when he lost control of his vehicle while traveling on Route 23 in Forest Hill and crashed head-on into another vehicle, state police said.

The crash brought to 337 the number of people killed on the state's roads this year, compared with 348 at the same time last year, state police said.

FOR THE RECORD - Because of incorrect information provided by the state police, an article published in the Aug. 16 editions of The Sun gave the wrong age for a man killed Aug. 14 in a traffic accident in Harford County. Steven Wayne Shumate of Fallston was 22.
The Sun regrets the errors.

Police said Steven Wayne Shumate, 32, of the 2100 block of Round Hill Road in Fallston was driving a 2000 Hyundai west on Route 23 east of Route 24 at 9:10 p.m. when he crossed over the yellow line and into the path of an eastbound 1998 Toyota driven by Zenobia Elise Wade, 39, of the 1300 block of Cooptown Road in Forest Hill.

Police said Shumate, the car's only occupant, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Wade, the only occupant of her vehicle, sustained nonlife-threatening injuries and was flown by a state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was in fair condition last night, said police and a Shock Trauma spokesperson.

Police said the crash closed the roadway for nearly five hours and that the accident is under investigation.
