Blue Jays update

Toronto figured to contend this season after finishing in third place for six straight years, but last place is more likely. The Blue Jays fired manager Carlos Tosca during the weekend and promoted first base coach John Gibbons. They wanted to deal first baseman Carlos Delgado, a pending free agent, at the non-waiver deadline, but he wouldn't waive his no-trade clause to play for a contender. Nothing has gone right for this team, which is 29-27 at home but last night fell to 19-40 on the road. Batista complained of back problems after giving up a season-high eight runs in five innings in Sunday's loss to the New York Yankees, and took anti-inflammatory drugs. Former Orioles pitcher Pat Hentgen has retired, but Baltimore fans will recognize Towers. The Orioles swept Toronto in a three-game series at SkyDome in April, outscoring the Blue Jays 23-5.
