BERNARD MAURICE SPARBY, 74, of Delmar, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at his home. Born in Superior, Wisconsin he was the son of the late Bernard John and Catherine Muriel Mc Kenna Sparby. Mr. Sparby, over the years, was a member of various hunting clubs including the Worton Hilton Hunting Club and various newspaper associations and had previous involvements with community and civic organizations. He served in the Coast Guard following World War II. For 53 years he was in the newspaper business, including; the Duluth Herald & News Tribune in Duluth, MN as advertising manager, The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, TN as director of advertising, The Trenton Times in Trenton, NJ as publisher, The Baltimore News American in Baltimore as publisher and retiring in 1996 from the Beaumont Enterprise in Beaumont, TX as general manager. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Holly Sparby of Delmar; three children and their spouses: David and Nancy Sparby of North Oaks, MN, Daniel and Deborah Sparby of Severna Park, MD and Heather and Stephen Welsh of Odenton, MD; a brother, Neal Sparby and his wife, Pauline of Milwaukee, WI; seven grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew. All services will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21802.
