Health Department to offer free immunizations for children

The Howard County Health Department will offer free immunizations for infants, children and adolescents from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Southeastern Health Center, adjacent to the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane.

A parent or guardian must accompany children and bring immunization records. Each child's doctor or health clinic can determine which immunizations are needed for children by age 2, and which are needed for children entering school.

Immunization clinics will also be held in the fall.

Laurel College Center to hold information session

The Laurel College Center, a partnership of Prince George's Community College and Howard Community College, will hold a drop-in information session from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 312 Marshall Ave., Laurel.

The public is invited to tour the center, talk with academic and financial aid advisers and learn how to enroll for credit and noncredit courses.

Registration for credit courses is open; classes are to begin Aug. 30. Noncredit course registration is continuing.

For teens: The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, is sponsoring a series of programs for youngsters ages 9 and older in its Summer Teen Activities Center. A scrapbooking club, a book club and chess and checkers clubs are available. Registration is encouraged. 410-880-5980.

Summer concert: Volunteers at the South Laurel Recreation Council will sponsor a free performance of oldies, blues and swing by the Moonlighters from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today on the lawn of Montpelier Mansion, Route 197 at Montpelier Drive, in Laurel. Take a friend, a picnic and a blanket or a chair. Free parking is available through entrances at Montpelier Drive and Muirkirk Road. The show will be canceled if it rains heavily. 301-776-2805.

Memories of Savage: Savage Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the Faith and Ministry Center of Savage United Methodist Church, 9032 Baltimore St., Savage. The topic is: "Summertime Memories of Savage." The meeting is open to everyone. Those who attend will hear stories of life in Savage and be invited to share memories. English club: The Savage branch library sponsors an English Conversation Club for non-native speakers from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. The club will offer an opportunity to practice speaking English in an informal group setting. Registration is not required. 410-880-5980.

Animation art: Hands of Time Art Gallery in the New Weave Building at Savage Mill is showing The Magic of Disney: A Fine Art Show Celebrating Nostalgia in Animation Art through Aug. 29. The show features original framed art and signed, limited print editions. Bruce Lau, a Disney sculptor, will sign examples of his work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 28. Exhibit: Laurel Museum, 817 Main St., Laurel, is showing an exhibition, Horace Capron at 200: A Laurel Founder's Life. The exhibition, which runs through December, covers Capron's time as a Civil War cavalry officer (thought to have been the oldest in the Union Army), a U.S. commissioner of agriculture and leader of an American delegation to Japan. Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
