Veteran employee to serve temporarily in public safety post

The Carroll County commissioners have appointed Scott Campbell acting administrator of support services for the Office of Public Safety.

Campbell will oversee the emergency communications center and the county government's emergency management and fire protection engineering functions. A county employee since 1982, Campbell has served as Carroll's fire protection engineer, and most recently as assistant administrator for public safety.

A graduate of the University of Maryland, Campbell holds a bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering and has been involved in volunteer fire and rescue service for more than 28 years.

Sykesville basketball hoops deemed a `great success'

After monitoring players using temporary basketball hoops on town courts for the past several months, the Sykesville Police Department has found "no problems whatsoever," Chief John Williams told the Town Council this week.

"We have had great success with this project," Williams said. "The players are keeping the areas clean and orderly."

The town installed several portable hoops in town parks after banning the devices from municipal streets last year. Officials are looking for permanent locations for the basketball courts and will discuss a plan for phasing them into several parks at the Sept. 12 council meeting.
