A free outdoor movie

Gather the kids, a picnic and a blanket and catch a free outdoor screening of The Cat in the Hat tomorrow night in Herring Run Park.

The movie will be projected on the side of a building painted to look like a movie screen.

Set up camp on a grassy slope facing the "screen." Vendors sell popcorn, and organizers recommend taking bug spray. In case of rain, the movie will be shown the next Friday. The movie starts at dusk (about 8:30 p.m.)

Herring Run Park is in Northeast Baltimore, near Belair and Chesterfield roads. Call 410-485-8422.

Fashion show for Fido

Ah, the dog days of summer are upon us. On Sunday, the Friends of Patterson Park is sponsoring a canine fashion show. A pet photographer will snap pictures as pets and their owners strut down a catwalk that will be set up in the park.

People and their pets are encouraged to dress in costume, and an announcer will call out names.

The photos will be printed out, and framed, and distributed on the spot -- so you'll go home with a gorgeous (or goofy) shot. Hot dogs and doggie treats will be served.

The event -- officially called Dogs on the Catwalk -- runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $30 a person.

The show is held near the marble fountain in Patterson Park, at East Lombard Street and South Patterson Park Avenue. Preregistration is required, and space is limited to 35 participants. Call 410-276-3676.
