College is holding hospitality program open house Tuesday

Howard Community College will hold a Hospitality Management Open House from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hilton Garden Inn Columbia, 8241 Snowden River Parkway.

The session, which will introduce visitors to the college's Hospitality Management program and career opportunities in the industry, will feature culinary demonstrations by local professionals.

The event will be repeated from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Laurel College Center plans information session

Laurel College Center, a partnership of Prince George's Community College and Howard Community College, will hold a drop-in information session from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 312 Marshall Ave., Laurel.

Visitors are invited to tour the center, talk with academic and financial aid advisers and learn how to enroll for credit and noncredit classes. Credit classes are to begin Aug. 30; noncredit course registration is continuing.

School board advisory panel seeks at-large members

The Citizens Advisory Committee to the Board of Education, a group of citizens and PTA representatives that advises the elected school board, is seeking at-large members for the 2004-2005 school year.

The committee sponsors educational programming for members and offers them an opportunity to study and comment on curriculum, education policy, redistricting and the education budget. The committee usually meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the boardroom at the Department of Education in Ellicott City.

At-large members serve two-year terms.

Workshops for parents slated in Ellicott City

The Howard County Child Care Resource Center is sponsoring workshops for parents and childcare and early childhood professionals.

"When Play Isn't Just Play," on the necessity and therapeutic value of play for children, will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today. The cost is $20.

"Family Child Care 101," a workshop on starting a child care business, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $25.

"Designing and Implementing the Library Area," a workshop on creating a space in which children will want to read, will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 19. The cost is $20.

"Shaken Baby Syndrome," a workshop offered by the Howard County Health Department, will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 25. The cost is $10.

The workshops will be held in Suite 380, 3300 N. Ridge Road, Ellicott City.

Help available for parents of children with ADHD

CHADD of Greater Baltimore sponsors a support group for parents of children diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

Meetings are held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the Loyola College Graduate Center, 8890 McGaw Road, Columbia.

The meeting is open to the public, and newcomers are welcome.
