Ex-DSS workers plead guilty to felony theft charges

Two former employees of the Baltimore Department of Social Services pleaded guilty to bilking the department out of $115,000 in overtime, the state attorney general's office reported.

The defendants, R. Paula Mitchell, 50, and Helene Pendleton, 45, pleaded guilty Friday to felony theft charges in city Circuit Court. From December 1999 to December 2002 they stole the $115,000 from DSS through a scheme that brought them overtime pay they had not earned, according to the attorney general's office.

Mitchell and Pendleton forged the signature of a supervisor to have the fraudulent overtime approved, the attorney general's office said.
