Noemi Ruiz, 89, homemaker and volunteer

Noemi Ruiz, a homemaker and volunteer, died of Alzheimer's disease Friday at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. She was 89.

Born Noemi Padro, she was raised in Ciales, Puerto Rico, and immigrated to New York City in 1941. She also lived in Venezuela and returned to Puerto Rico briefly before moving to Baltimore in 1951.

In 1936, she married Rafael Ruiz, a court interpreter who died in 1997.

Mrs. Ruiz lived for many years on West Mulberry Street before moving to Stella Maris in 1997. She had been a volunteer with Our Daily Bread and was a communicant of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in downtown Baltimore.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at Stella Maris, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road.

Mrs. Ruiz is survived by two sons, Gonzalo Ruiz of Baltimore and Joseph Ruiz of Little Rock, Ark.; a daughter, Luisa Ruiz of Falls Church, Va.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
