Wine Of The Week

August 04, 2004|By Michael Dresser

2003 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Riesling ($11). This exceptional dry white wine from Australia - bottled under a screw cap - is an exceptional value. Don't dismiss it as a fruity summertime quaff. It's a complex and fascinating wine with a broad array of flavors: lemon, pear, slate, sweet pea. Its rigorous, steely structure is reminiscent of the great rieslings of Alsace. It deserves to be served with elegant preparations of seafood or pork.

These are some other recently tasted and highly recommended wines with screw caps:

2002 Robert Pepi Shiraz, California ($8).

2003 Robert Pepi Napa Valley Chardonnay ($8).

2003 Saint M Riesling, Pfalz, Germany, marketed by Chateau Ste. Michelle ($12).
