Burglary suspect hospitalized after being shot fleeing house

July 20, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A man who police said burglarized a Lansdowne home yesterday afternoon was shot in the buttock by a witness -- the owner of a nearby liquor store who chased him as he ran away, Baltimore County police said.

The co-owners of the liquor store in the 2200 block of Hammonds Ferry Road were standing outside their business about 1:20 p.m. when they spotted a man walking up the driveway of a home across the street, police said. The men knew the person did not live there, and checked on the property, police said.

The liquor store owners notified the homeowner, who had been working in his garage, and the three were about to enter the home when the intruder -- carrying a purse -- pushed his way through a screen door and past them, police said.

The apparent thief dropped the purse and ran -- chased by the owners, one of whom fired a single shot and wounded him, police said. The suspect was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.

Police did not identify any of the men because no charges had been filed in the case.
