Millersville resident to run for Circuit Court judge

A sixth candidate for Circuit Court judge in Anne Arundel County was added to the November ballot last week by the state Board of Elections.

Millersville resident Stephen Beatty, 35, an assistant public defender in Baltimore and instructor at Anne Arundel Community College, is the Libertarian Party candidate in the nonpartisan general election.

Three sitting judges are being challenged by a lawyer in private practice, the counsel to Annapolis's mayor and Beatty.

Bench warrant quashed for terminally ill man

A bench warrant issued Monday for a terminally ill man who did not return from Alabama to be sentenced for a drunken-driving crash that killed his friend was quashed at the end of the week after the defendant sent records indicating he was undergoing medical treatment, prosecutors said Friday.

Sentencing probably will be rescheduled for next month for Richard Vernon Green, 42, said Shelly Stickell, assistant state's attorney. The former Columbia Beach man was drunk when his truck struck a utility pole on Columbia Beach Road on June 2, 2002, killing Joseph Edward Klotz, 41, of Wayson's Corner.

Green, whose sentencing was delayed until last Monday to allow him to spend his remaining months with his sons, was to be sentenced that day. But he called his lawyer to say he was in Alabama and was too ill to return. Attorneys in the case say he has cancer.
