On the Brandywine

Help support the Brandywine Conservancy in Chadds Ford, Pa., with a canoe trip down the Brandywine River Saturday at 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Young Friends of the Brandywine Conservancy, the family-friendly event concludes with a barbecue and live music. Canoes are provided.

Salute to veterans

Travel to Alexandria this weekend to honor World War II veterans as well as active and retired military. Events kick off tomorrow with a USO swing dance to raise funds for the USO of Metropolitan Washington. The event runs from 8 p.m. to midnight with music by the Tom Cunningham Orchestra and performances by the Liberty Belles and Tom and Debra swing dancers.

All weekend, visitors can enjoy performances of the three-act play Letters from the Front: WWII at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Woven into the play are letters dated from every major American conflict. Tomorrow and Saturday the play will be performed at 8 p.m. Show time for Sunday is 2 p.m.

On Saturday evening, enjoy a free military band concert under the stars at the King Street Gardens from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wrap up the weekend with the World War II Remembrance Memorial Service at Market Square in front of City Hall on Sunday. The free event will run from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The USO swing dance will be held at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center, 105 N. Union St. Tickets are $20. "Letters from the Front" will be performed at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial at 101 Callahan Drive. Tickets are $26 on Friday , $30 on Saturday and $22.50 on Sunday. Winterthur Tuesdays

Cure summer boredom with crafts, hands-on nature activities and storytelling, through Aug. 31 at Winterthur's Terrific Tuesdays in Winterthur, Del. Winterthur invites children and families to its estate and galleries, which are home to 85,000 American antiques.

Kids can make bookmarks and pins, listen to storytellers in the Enchanted Woods fairytale garden and play with objects from America's past. For an additional $5 per person, families can take the "Once Upon a Family" tour and learn about the life of the du Pont family.

Terrific Tuesdays are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. "Once Upon a Family" tours run Tuesdays through Sundays at 12:30 p.m. One adult ticket is free with each child ticket purchased.
