DR. HENRY DOELLER SEVERN, 89, died Monday, July 12, 2004. Dr. Severn, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, lived his early life in Washington D.C. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University where he was elected into Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity. He obtained his orthopaedic training in New York Orthopaedic Hospital, and during World War II he served in the Army Medical Corps. In 1947 he made his home in Asheville, NC where he practiced as an orthopaedic surgeon until his retirement in 1982. He was a longtime member of the NC Orthopaedic Association and served as its president in 1965. He resided at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville, NC since 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betta Bowman Severn in 1992. Dr. Severn is survived by daughters, Susan Schearer and her husband, Hartley, of Winchester, VA and Christine Waters of Greenville, NC; and grandchildren, Wesley Waters, of Winston-Salem, NC and Austin Waters of Raleigh, NC; and former son-in-law, Buddy Waters of Greenville, NC. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville, NC. A private family burial will take place in Asheville, NC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center, Brody School of Medicine at ECU, 525 Moye Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858; or the Cypress Glen Alzheimer's Unit, c/o Cypress Glen Retirement Community, 100 Hickory St., Greenville, NC 27858.
