On Sunday, July 11, 2004, MSGR. HUGH J. PHILLIPS, 97, a native of Washington, D.C., since age 12, he spent his entire life at Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, MD. Ordained from Mt. St. Mary's Seminary in 1935, he was a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore for 69 years. He was made a Domestic prelate with the title Right Reverend Monsignor by His Holiness Pope Paul VI in April 1965. Msgr. Phillips was the 19th President of Mt. St. Mary's College. He was known as the restorer of the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Emmitsburg. He was the first priest in the history of the Knights of Columbus to serve as Grand Knight of the Order as a priest. He received the Seton Founder's Award in 1987. In 1996, he was invested into the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Msgr. Phillips always had a beautiful, filial devotion to The Blessed Mother and he helped others heroically to love Jesus and Mary. Surviving are nieces Marilyn C. Mc Grath and Josephine Celmer and nephews Thomas P. Mc Grath, Anthony M. Mc Grath and F. James Mc Grath. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 A.M. Friday, July 16 at the Chapel of Immaculate Conception at Mount St. Mary's University, Emmitsburg. Interment will be in the Mt. St. Mary's Section of St. Anthony's Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel on Thursday from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. with a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 P.M.; and from 7 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Msgr. Hugh J. Phillips Memorial Fund, National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
