Jones Paal, Lavara "Vay"

La VARA "Vay" JONES PAAL, age 71, died peacefully Sunday, July 11, 2004, at her home in Snow Hill. Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Paul Morgan Jones, Sr., and Evelyn Williams Jones. She is survived by her husband Michael William Paal, a son Robert Paul van de Graaff of Boston and a son Bruce Morgan Young of Snow Hill, a step son Rutland Beard Paal and his three children Skip, Ryan and Elizabeth all of Baltimore. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Helen Dryden Jones of Snow Hill and five nieces Carol Barr Bounds of Salisbury, Sue Barr Todd of Cambridge, Diane Elizabeth Jones of Houston, TX, Barbara Jones Pusey and Janice Jones Warren, both of Snow Hill. She was preceded in death by a sister Eleanor Hinton and a brother Paul M. Jones Jr. Vay was a graduate of Snow High School and a Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, VA. She was an avid equestrian for many years and had won numerous championships throughout the state. She had been the Grand Marshall at Ocean Downs Raceway for many years. She was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. She had been active in many clubs and organizations including the Dunes Club of Maryland, Worcester County Garden Club, American Forest Association, Southern Forest Landowners, Maryland Forest Association and had served on their board of directors and Maryland Tree Farmers Association. She had generously donated 140 acres of woodland to the Nature Conservancy in 1990 which established her as an honorary lifetime member of The Nature Conservancy. She and her husband Mike were avid gardeners and enjoyed for many years their "Secret Garden."A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11 A.M. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. The Rev. George Patterson and the Rev. Olin Shockly will officiate. A reception will follow in the Jackson Memorial building. Interment will be in Whatcoat Cemetery on Federal St. in Snow Hill at 3 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Jackson Memorial Building, 112 High St., Salisbury, MD 21801 or to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733 Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Snow Hill.
