Talent competition scheduled at TownMall

TownMall of Westminster has announced activities for the month.

TownMall is the official audition site for the 2004 Carroll County Search for Greatness Talent Competition. Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Friday for ages 11 to 13, and July 23 for ages 14 to 17; and 1 p.m. Saturday for ages 5 to 10, and July 24 for ages 18 and older.

A $5 nonrefundable registration fee is charged for the competition.

TownMall will award a $100 shopping spree to the winner in each age category at the final competition to be held Aug. 1 at the Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair. Registration forms are available at Customer Service in the mall.

WIYY- FM 98 Rock will broadcast live from TownMall during the third annual 98 Rock Blood Drive from July 21 to July 23.

Carrolltown Center plans school, sports attractions

Carrolltown Center in Eldersburg will hold a back-to-school celebration for schoolchildren and sports fans Saturday.

Sports fans can meet Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Matt Zielinski and wide receiver David Darling, plus an unnamed player from noon to 2 p.m. on the Peebles courtyard stage.

To receive a free autograph from all three players, patrons are asked to stop by the Arena Sports Cards and Games to check out a list of needs for American military personnel serving in Iraq. Shoppers donating an item through Friday will receive a ticket for the autographs.

Little Professor Book Center will sponsor visits from Curious George, Mouse from Give a Mouse a Cookie, Franklin, Clifford and the Cat in the Hat from noon to 3 p.m. in center court.

Also from noon to 3 p.m., Maryland State Police and Freedom Area Lions Club will hold a free event and offer DNA testing kits to parents for their children.

The mall is a collection point for school supplies for the Shepherd's Staff in Westminster. The ecumenical ministry has a shop for needy children to get necessary school supplies, such as pens and pencils, notebooks and paper, crayons, folders, rulers and more.

The mall will hold a drawing Sept. 7 for a back-to-school gift pack. Entry forms are at selected merchants.

Chamber plans event on improving sales

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking breakfast at 8 a.m. July 27 at New Windsor Conference Center, 500 Main St.

Mike Manion from Carroll Community College will discuss more concepts in how to "Absolutely, Positively Make More Sales ... Part 2."

The cost for the meal is $12. Reservations are required by July 20.

Applications available for Leadership Carroll

Leadership Carroll is a program of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and Carroll Community College that is open to anyone who lives or works in the county.

Participants meet one day a month from September to June for site visits, lectures, expert presentations, hands-on demonstrations and networking.

Programs focus on such topics as state and local government, agriculture, education, economic development, health and human services, justice and the law, and nonprofit organizations.

Applicants are chosen to represent diversity in career, educational, social, political and cultural backgrounds, as well as geographic location.

Applicants should demonstrate personal commitment to community service; achievement in professional and community involvement; and the ability to set and achieve personal goals.

Applications are available online at or from the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, 700 Corporate Center Court, Suite L, Westminster.

Tuition for the 2004-2005 program is $1,000 and includes training materials, transportation, continental breakfast and lunch. Payment is due upon acceptance.

Merritt Athletic Club offers lifeguard class

Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg will hold a full lifeguard certification class this month.

The class will include lifeguard training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation for personal rescue and first aid.

Individuals age 15 and older may take the class. The cost is $275.

The club is on Progress Way off Route 32.

Child care centers group receives $20,300 grant

The Carroll Child Care Centers Inc. has received a $20,300 grant from the Judith P. Hoyer Early Care and Education Enhancement Grant for Private Providers.

The grant will be used to provide funding for professional development and higher education for the center's staff.

The Judith P. Hoyer Early Child Care and Education Enhancement Program was established in July 2000 through Senate Bill 793.

The Maryland General Assembly allocated $7 million to establish the Judith P. Hoyer Early Child Care and Education Enhancement Centers, provide enhancement grants for private providers and track progress in school readiness using the Maryland Model for School Readiness.
