A Dayton teenager accidentally shot by a friend Tuesday afternoon remained in serious but stable condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Katie L. Weyer, 17, of the 14000 block of Howard Road was hit in the upper body by a single bullet from a handgun being handled by a friend at his Woodbine home.

Weyer, who will be a senior at Glenelg High School in the fall, and two 18-year-olds had gathered at the home of another 18-year-old friend to swim in his family's pool.

The teenage resident had retrieved his father's small-caliber handgun from a safe to show them, Howard County police said.

Police were continuing to investigate the incident and will consult with the state's attorney's office to determine whether criminal charges would be appropriate, said Sherry Llewellyn, a police spokeswoman.

"It's still considered an accidental shooting," she said.
