Government offices, libraries, landfill closed tomorrow

Carroll County government offices will be closed tomorrow in honor of Independence Day.

Northern Landfill and the Recycling Center will be closed.

Carroll County public libraries and senior centers also will be closed tomorrow.

Taxpayers group to help with assessment challenges

The Carroll County Taxpayers Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Westminster Senior Center, 125 Stoner Ave.

Jim Reter will discuss "The Conservative's Agenda."

Jerry Brunst will be available to help residents prepare to challenge high assessments on their property.

Public Works Department announces road projects

The Carroll County Department of Public Works has announced road projects for this week.

Patching: Gorsuch Road from Route 482 to Center Street.

Inlet repair: Arched Bow Valley subdivision streets; Sunset Way subdivision streets.

Inlet replacement: Lincoln Manor subdivision, Springhill Lane.

Reclaiming and paving: Aspen Run subdivision streets.

Reclaiming pavement: Alesia Road from Millers Station Road to Roller Road.

Reclaiming pavement and paving: Schalk Road No. 1 from Water Tank Road to Grave Run Road.

Paving: Church Street from Route 86 to Alesia-Lineboro Road.

Closed for reconstruction (local traffic only): Obrecht Road from White Rock Road to Route 97.

Closed for bridge replacement: Stoney Lane and Freter Road between Old Liberty Road and Buckhorn Road.

Family center plans July activities for members

The Carroll County Family Center will offer activities for member families this month.

The center will be closed tomorrow in honor of Independence Day.

Weekly parent-child activity themes will be: this week, ocean; July 12, desert; July 19, colors; July 26, rainbows.

The Career Exploration Series will cover personalities and careers, resumes, mock interviews, and basic computer skills. The series is held at 1 p.m. Tuesdays.

A movie and sundae afternoon will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday featuring Where the Heart Is with Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd, and July 21 with I'm With Lucy.

A Wild West Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon July 14. Registration is required for the event, which will feature old West activities.

"Under the Sea Day" will be celebrated July 28. Games, activities and lunch will be featured.

The center's annual adventure camp will be held Aug. 9 to 13 with activities and trips for member children. Registration is required. See the center for details.

Historical society to hold talk on Taneytown's past

The Historical Society of Carroll County will hold its monthly box lunch talk at noon July 13 at American Legion Carroll Post 31 at Green and Sycamore streets in Westminster.

Tyler J. Boone from the Taneytown Heritage Committee will chronicle the town's 250-year history. He will spotlight memorable events and people from the county's oldest incorporated town.

Participants may bring a lunch or purchase a meal from the American Legion. Lunches can be ordered after 11 a.m. at 410-857-7953. Beverage and dessert will be provided.

Admission is $2 for nonmembers; free for historical society members. Reservations are recommended.

Democratic club plans picnic at Piney Run Park

The Carroll County Democratic Club will hold its annual club picnic from 2 p.m. to sundown July 18 at Piney Run Park near Eldersburg.

The picnic is free to dues-paying members. Hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken and beverages will be provided. Participants are asked to bring a dessert if their last name begins with A-L, and a salad for last names M-Z.

Reservations are requested by July 12.

The club's membership runs from July 1 to June 30. Dues are $10 per person or $20 per family. Membership dues and information can be sent to Treasurer CCDC, 1805 Uniontown Road, Westminster 21158. Checks should be made payable to Carroll County Democratic Club.

Commission on Aging seeks to fill vacancy

The Carroll County commissioners are seeking resumes and letters of interest for a Westminster-area vacancy to the Commission on Aging.

The commission's responsibilities include:

Reviewing, evaluating and commenting on area plan objectives as drafted by staff.

Serving as a steering committee for prioritization of programs to be funded.

Bringing before the bureau the needs and issues of resident senior citizens.

Developing positions on legislation.

Advising the commissioners on programs and fiscal matters relating to the bureau and funding of programs and services for senior citizens.
