Hometown: Baltimore

Current Members: Todd Marcus, bass clarinet and soprano clarinet; Issa Lambson, alto saxophone; Russell Kirk, tenor saxophone; Harry Appelman, piano; DeAndre Schaifer, trumpet; Jeff Reed, bass; Lyle Link, alto saxophone and flute; Reginald Cyntje, trombone; Mike Kuhl, drums.

Founded In: 2000

Style: jazz (duh)

Influenced by: artists from "all over the jazz spectrum," including John Coltrane and Joe Henderson

Notable: Formed by clarinetist Todd Marcus and saxophonist / flutist Lyle Link, the nine-member band blends traditional jazz with a variety of other musical styles, including hip-hop and world beat.

The group, which plays regularly in the Baltimore-Washington area, features performers who've shared the stage with Herbie Hancock and other great jazz contemporaries.

Quotable: Marcus on the band's sound: "It's modern jazz. We use straight-ahead jazz rhythms and modern jazz harmonies. The music swings hard ... [but audiences] are able to understand [it] without having any prior exposure to jazz or soloing."

Check out the Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra when the band plays tonight at the Belvedere Hotel's 13th Floor lounge. The show is scheduled to begin around 10 p.m. The 13th Floor is at 1 E. Chase St. Call 410-347-0888.
