Hot-air balloons in the Shenandoah

See the vistas of the Shenandoah Valley this holiday weekend during the eighth annual BB&T Balloon Rally. Festivities kick off Saturday on the Parade Ground of the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., with piloted balloon flights at 6:30 p.m. Flights will resume Sunday at 6 a.m. Sunday activities will also include tethered balloon rides, a vintage automobile display, fire truck ladder rides and children's activities.

The Rockbridge Choral Society will perform Sunday at 6 p.m. followed by local band Loose Change at 7 p.m. A 20-minute fireworks display will follow at 9:30 p.m. Piloted balloon flights will also be available Monday at 6 a.m.

Admission is free. Piloted balloon rides cost $150 and tethered rides are $10. Lexington is at the intersection of Interstates 64 and 81 in Rockbridge County, Va. Call 540-461-0006 or visit www.sun riserotarylexva.org. Balloon flights are subject to weather.

Independence Day at Mount Vernon

Visitors are invited to George Washington's plantation home in Mount Vernon, Va., Sunday for 18th-century patriotic music, a wreath-laying by the Sons of the American Revolution and the annual Red, White and Blue Concert performed by the National Concert Band of America. Free birthday cake.

Admission is $11 for adults, $10.50 for seniors, $5 for children ages 6 to 11 and free for children 5 and under. George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens is at 3200 George Washington Memorial Parkway in Mount Vernon, Va. Call 703-780-2000 or visit www.mountvernon.org.

Philadelphia weekend

Celebrate the Fourth of July at America's birthplace with the 2004 Sunoco Welcome America Festival.

Dance the evening away tonight with the Philadelphia Salsa Congress. A free demonstration and lesson are from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Independence Visitor Center at Sixth and Market streets.

Tomorrow is Kid's Day, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Festival Pier (Columbus Boulevard and Spring Garden Street) at Penn's Landing. At dusk, head down to Penn's Landing (Columbus Boulevard at Walnut Street) for a fireworks display over the Delaware River.

On Sunday, gear up for an Independence Day Ceremony at Independence Hall beginning at 10 a.m. Limited public seating is available. Call 215-683-2062 for tickets. Stick around that evening for the Sunoco Sweet Sounds of Liberty Concert and Fireworks at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m., and fireworks follow at 10:30 p.m.
