Willie Mays coming to Hagerstown

Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays, who played his first professional game in Hagerstown, will return to the city for a reception in his honor Aug. 9 at the Clarion Hotel.

The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which are $50, go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. and can be ordered by contacting the Hagerstown Suns at 301-791-6266.

The day Mays finished high school in June 1950, he signed with the New York Giants and was assigned to their Class B team in Trenton, N.J. His first game was in Hagerstown against the Hagerstown Braves. The next year, Mays was named National League Rookie of the Year.

The Suns are a Single-A affiliate of the Giants, who moved to San Francisco after the 1957 season.
