Rev. Basil Stockmeyer, 89, Roman Catholic priest

The Rev. Basil Stockmeyer, a Roman Catholic priest who served in Irvington and Halethorpe parishes, died of cancer Wednesday at Elder Wood Health Care in Williamsville, N.Y. He was 89.

Born in Forestville, N.Y., he was a 1934 graduate of Holy Cross Seminary in Dunkirk, N.Y., and then entered the Passionists, a community of priests and Christian brothers.

He was ordained in Newark, N.J., in 1942 and held posts in Scranton, Pa., Jamaica, N.Y., and Dunkirk, N.Y., before being assigned to St. Joseph Monastery in Baltimore's Irvington neighborhood. He served at the parish from 1974 to 1976 and again from 1979 to 1988.

He was chaplain at Charlestown Retirement Community from 1988 to 1990 and later served at Church of the Ascension in Halethorpe, where he was confessor to the Good Shepherd nuns.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered yesterday in Tonawanda, N.Y.

Survivors include a brother, Paul Stockmeyer; and two sisters, Margaret Lubrano and Mary Plumb, all of New York.
