Health fair Saturday to feature screenings, entertainment, food

Catastrophic Health Planners Inc. will hold a health fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Finksburg Plaza Shopping Center on Route 140 at Route 91.

The fair will include free screenings, educational development, music, entertainment and food. The first 200 people to visit will receive a free Catastrophic Health Planners T-shirt.

Catastrophic Health Planners is a nonprofit organization that provides free educational development, support and referral services to patients and their families who are facing a critical health event.

Red Cross blood drive scheduled for June 24

The Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. June 24 at the Westminster Family Center.

The drive is sponsored by the Westminster Department of Recreation and Parks.

Appointments are requested to reduce waiting times.

Health Department plans business conference

The Carroll County Health Department will hold its eighth annual Risky Business Conference June 25 at the Best Western Westminster Catering & Conference Center.

The theme of the half-day conference is "Finding Your Balance: Work Smarter, Not Harder."

The keynote speaker will be Andy Steed, owner of Role Play Foundation USA, a training company that teaches effective communication.

Free self-defense class offered to women June 29

Health and Fitness, Freedom Area Recreation Council's adult fitness program, will sponsor a free self-defense class for women at 7:30 p.m. June 29 at the studio in Carrolltown Center in Eldersburg.

Lt. Kirby Maybush of the Frederick County Sheriff's department will give tips on how to avoid rape, sexual assault and muggings.

The seminar is open to the public, but registration is requested.

Volunteers needed to staff county Rape Crisis hot line

The Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County is seeking people who are interested in becoming hot line crisis counselors.

No counseling experience is necessary. Rape Crisis will provide training. Volunteers will be trained to staff a 24-hour telephone hot line. Duties could include accompanying clients to the hospital or to police.

Counselor safety and confidentiality is monitored, and counselors can often cover a shift from home.

Training is offered on a rotating basis, with six months to complete the program. A refundable training fee will be charged.
