County government, schools, libraries closed for holiday

Carroll County government offices will be closed tomorrow for Memorial Day.

Northern Landfill and the recycling center will be closed.

Carroll County public libraries, schools and senior centers also will be closed tomorrow.

Street milling scheduled in Westminster this week

The City of Westminster has announced road work projects starting this week.

The following streets are scheduled to be milled and overlayed: Madison Street, East Green Street between Washington Road and South Colonial, and South Colonial between East Main Street and the city limits.

Traffic flow and access to driveways and parking lots will be maintained through flagging operations during the work.

On-street parking will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the work.

The project is expected to take about two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Microsurface treatment planned for area roads

The Carroll County Department of Public Works has announced road projects for this week.

The following roads are scheduled for microsurface treatment, weather permitting. Each site will require two days of work to complete and will cause some minor inconvenience.

Yona Court from Windermere Way to the cul-de-sac;

Caves Court from Victor Drive to the cul-de-sac;

Dunes Court from Harbor Court to the cul-de-sac;

Gleneagle Court from Hilton Head Way to the cul-de-sac;

Harbor Court from Victor Drive to the cul-de-sac;

Hilton Head Way from Bartholow Road to Harbor Court;

Pebble Court from Hilton Head Way to the cul-de-sac;

Victor Drive from Johnsville Road to the cul-de-sac;

Piney Ridge Drive from Freedom Avenue to Piney Ridge Parkway;

Wertz Road from the Baltimore County line to the gravel section will be resurfaced.

Republican Women's Club to hold dinner June 1

The Republican Women's Club of Carroll County will meet Tuesday at Bullocks Family Restaurant, 2020 Sykesville Road, Westminster.

State Sen. Andrew P. Harris from District 7 in Baltimore and Harford counties will discuss State Sen. E. J. Pipkin's campaign for U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski's seat. Pipkin is from the Eastern Shore.

Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30 p.m.

Electronics recycling at Northern Landfill

Carroll County government will hold its annual electronics recycling event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Northern Landfill, 1400 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster.

The landfill will only accept CPUs, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, laptops, cellular phones, copiers, TVs, VCRs, calculators, stereo electronics (no speakers), adding machines, fax machines and computer components (circuit boards, hard drives and fans). There is no fee.

Robert Strawbridge House to be rededicated June 6

The Strawbridge Shrine will hold a pilgrimage June 6 to rededicate the shrine where Robert Strawbridge first brought Methodism to America in the latter half of the 18th century.

The Robert Strawbridge House will be rededicated, and the meeting house, limestone entrance stone and the new Strawbridge statue will be dedicated in ceremonies beginning at 4 p.m.

Music will be provided by the Strawbridge United Methodist Church adult, men's and youth choirs, and the Westminster Municipal Band.

Visitors should park at the shrine between 3 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. to ride a shuttle to the site of the original log meeting house, where the first dedication will take place.

The group will return by shuttle to the shrine grounds for the other dedications.

Tours of the shrine buildings, including the John Evans House, will be available.

Refreshments will be served under a tent by the Johnsville UMC women and St. Paul's UMC of New Windsor men.

The shrine is at 2650 Strawbridge Lane off Wakefield Valley Road.

Sandy Mount Methodist building ribbon cutting

Sandy Mount United Methodist Church will celebrate the completion of a educational building during worship services at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. June 6.

Both worships will be devoted to the theme of the building consecration.

A celebration luncheon will be held after the 11 a.m. service. Consecration ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. with guest speaker the Rev. Louis Shockley, district superintendent.

A ribbon cutting will be held, then the Sunday school children will lead tours of the new building.

The church is at 2101 Old Westminster Pike.

Family center offers activities for members

The Carroll County Family Center will offer activities for member families next month.

Weekly parent-child activity themes will be sun safety, fathers, bugs and the flag.

Dinosaur Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon June 16.

A graduation celebration dinner will be held at 5 p.m. June 18.

A Dads and Doughnuts party for Father's Day will be held during drop-off time the morning of June 21.

A birthday bash for members will be held during lunch June 24. An All Stars Picnic will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. that day.

A Day at the Beach will be held at 10 a.m. June 29 at the center.
