Pop's next song of songs

May 29, 2004|By J. Wynn Rousuck

Mamma Mia! is about to wrap up its three-week run at the Hippodrome Theatre, and the clever way in which the musical blends a new story with old pop songs - in this case, by the former Swedish group ABBA - got us thinking. New musicals have already cropped up using the songs of Elvis and Queen, but what about some less likely pop songbook musicals? Here are a few we came up with:

Bye Bye Bye Britney, a bittersweet tale of love turned to hate, using the songs of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

Dogs, an unofficial American Kennel Club musical, using the songs of the Pet Shop Boys.

Long Time Fan, a gung-ho musical tribute to President Bush, using the songs of the Dixie Chicks.

I Am, I Am, a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry VIII, using the songs of Herman's Hermits.

Don't expect these to make it to Broadway any time soon. For now, there are limited tickets available for Mamma Mia! at the Hippodrome through tomorrow. Call 410-547-SEAT.
