A 20-year-old Towson University student was raped in her off-campus apartment early yesterday by a man who threatened her with a knife, Baltimore County police said.
The woman told police she awoke about 4 a.m. to find a man she did not recognize standing in her bedroom, said Officer Shawn Vinson, a police spokesman. The man held something over her face, then raped and sexually assaulted her, Vinson said.
After the attack, the man remained inside the woman's apartment on Greenview Terrace - just across from the university - and continued to threaten her for about two hours, Vinson said. Police were called about 7:15 a.m., after the man had fled, Vinson said.
The woman was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, police said, where she was being treated yesterday. The Sun does not name rape victims.
The attacker is described as college-aged, short and stocky with a speech impediment, Vinson said.
Police would not disclose the item used to cover the woman's face or how the man might have entered the apartment.
Yesterday morning, crime scene investigators were interviewing neighbors in the three-level white-brick building with blue shutters and were combing the wooded area behind it.
Lt. Charles J. Herring of the Towson University police said campus officers would step up patrols and visibility in light of the attack. Although Towson University police are not investigating the off-campus crime, Herring said they would assist county police as needed.
