A barefoot state of mind

Yo Gidget -- grab Moondoogie and your surfboard and head out to the beach.

This summer's swimwear trends include two-piece suits with halter tops and boy shorts as well as the classic string bikini. Fresh, bright colors such as pink and green, tropical prints and polka dots are all hot, too. And details such as keyholes and rhinestones dress up a plain one-piece with style.

Here are some of our top swimsuit and cover-up picks for the beach:

Dress up that classic string bikini with decorative front and side ties, a ruffled skirt and a Carmen Miranda-inspired tropical fruit print. Don't like the skirt? Wear a pair of boy shorts instead for a more modern look. Jantzen's Havana Good Time bikini separates cost $47 for the top, $69 for the ruffled skirt and $41 for the hipster trunk. Jantzen swimwear is available at Hecht's.

Lighting the way

Everything that's old is new again when you mix a retro-inspired Asian lantern print with a bit of black and white gingham. Jantzen's Lanterns tankini allows more coverage than the typical bikini, and the top can be paired with gingham capris or a wrap-around skirt for a fun, vintage look. $47 for the top, $41 for the bottoms. Jantzen swimwear is available at Hecht's.

No worries

Go tropical without letting it all hang out in this flirty tank suit. Acid green and petal pink make it preppy, empire waist and contrast binding make it flattering on most figure types. Hawaiian holiday tank, $48, from Lands End, call 800-963-4816 or go to the Web site: www.landsend.com.

Wave riders

Dude, board shorts are still hot in swimwear. Freshen up the look this summer with a bold floral print on a long, tie-front short. Go for red, navy or sky blue -- the wilder the print, the better. Floral board short, $49.50 from Banana Republic.

Top it off

Ahoy, matey. Get double wear out of that crochet tunic top you bought when you were feeling nostalgic for the '70s. Wear it over your bathing suit, and you'll look modern, feminine and cool, too. Kerchief is optional, of course. White cotton crochet tunic, $68, Banana Republic.

Dots, dots, dots

It's not itsy bitsy, teeny weeny or even yellow. But this multicolored pastel polka dot bikini is playful and reminiscent of a simpler time. Plus, we like the fact that the dots remind us of the Wonder Bread wrapper. Mmm. La Blanca polka dot bikini, $90 at South Moon Under in Ocean City, Rehoboth Beach, Annapolis, Towson and at www.southmoonunder.com.
