Wine Of The Week

May 19, 2004

2002 Domaine Pichot "Domaine Le Peu de la Moriette" Vouvray ($11). This amazing white wine from France's Loire Valley pulls a neat trick: It starts out sweet but finishes as a dry wine. In between, it entertains the nose with its floral aromas and the palate with an exceptional array of intense flavors: peach, cherry, tropical fruit and herbs, among others. Its appeal is punctuated by a burst of lively acidity typical of a fine chenin blanc. This wine is a pleasure to sip for its own charms, but it cries out to be served with spicy -- even fiery -- Asian cuisine. In addition to everything else, it's a tremendous value.
