Twelve seconds.

That's how long the defending Class 4A-3A state champion Broadneck girls lacrosse team will try to protect a one-goal lead and that's how long Severna Park has to score.

Yesterday's Class 4A-3A East region semifinal between the two teams was suspended due to thunder and lightning after two hours were spent waiting in an attempt to complete the game at Severna Park.

Play will resume at 3:45 this afternoon with the No. 4 Bruins leading 11-10 and the No. 9 Falcons with possession of the ball behind the Broadneck cage.

Following state rules, once play is halted because of thunder and lightning, the game can't resume until 30 minutes of lightning- and thunder-free weather. At 8:05 last night, after the teams returned to the field a second time, the game was finally suspended when another grumble of thunder was heard.

"I've never seen a situation like this - nothing remotely close," said Broadneck coach Karen Tengwall. "Twelve seconds is a lot of time. We're just going to try to stop them."

When the game was first stopped, the referees did not have the players set their sticks down where they were positioned, leaving uncertainty as to where each player should be when play resumes. Severna Park's Sam Price will have the ball behind the cage to the left of Broadneck goalie Megan Milhausen.

The same situation occurred at South River last night, where the Seahawks had a 16-15 lead on visiting Annapolis before play was suspended with 1:46 left in the game. The two winners will meet in the region final tomorrow.

In boys lacrosse, South River's game against visiting Severna Park, which was set to follow the girls game last night, will be played at 3:45 today.
