Mariners update

Viewed as a playoff contender when the season began, Seattle has spent 37 days in last place in the American League West. At least the Mariners have the best record of the AL bottom dwellers - small consolation for a team that's lost seven of eight games. Only two of Seattle's regulars have averages higher than their career marks: Dan Wilson (.319, .265) and Scott Spiezio (.268, .261). Edgar Martinez, a .314 career hitter before this season, is batting .248. Bret Boone missed the weekend series against New York (strained left hip flexor) but is expected to play tonight. He's hitting 21 points below his career average. The Mariners lost two of three to the Orioles at Camden Yards last month. The Orioles are 3-19 all-time at Safeco Field, losing their first 14 games. The Mariners will see Rodrigo Lopez and Erik Bedard, the order of their starts not yet determined.
