LETITIA SHENK BERNHARDT of Homewood Retirement Center, 16505 Virginia Avenue, Williamsport, Maryland died on Thursday, May 13, 2004 at Homewood. Born June 25, 1908 in Hagerstown, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Maud L. Shenk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Bernhardt in 1964. She was a 1927 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Upon graduation she attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland where she was the recipient of the coveted three year Tiffany Scholarship in music. She became the studio accompanist for her voice teacher, George Castille. She was a church soloist and the director of music in several churches in Baltimore as well. In 1949 she and her husband were two of the five people who organized the Baltimore Opera Company, which became incorporated in 1958. Mrs. Bernhardt worked with the company in many capacities for forty years. The company celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in the fall of 2000. She and her husband, both vocalists, were prominent in musical circles in Baltimore where Mrs. Bernhardt lived for sixty years. She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Shenk Wills and Julia Belle Westphal; and one brother, Charles Edward Shenk, Jr. Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, and announced at a later date. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown. Arrangements by Minnich Funeral Homes, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown
