Baltimore Youth Hockey tryouts slated for this month, June

Baltimore Youth Hockey will hold tryouts for Midget, Bantam and Peewee teams - AA, A and B - May 23 to 27 at Ice World, Abingdon.

The club will conduct a six-week summer league at Ice World for ages 6 to 14 and offer discounts on the Ice World high school league. Evaluations for Stars and North Stars rec teams will be held in September.

Harford college offers preschool for 3-year-olds

Harford Community College is offering afternoon preschool classes for 3-year-olds beginning in September. The nine-month program includes music, art, crafts, computer science, story time, drama, science, math and language arts.

Preschool sessions meet from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Joppa Hall Annex 1 on HCC's campus. Tuition is $99 a month and includes a balanced snack and all materials. Participants must be toilet trained.

Volunteers sought for literacy program

The Literacy Education Department of Harford Community College is seeking volunteers to assist instructors in English as a Second Language classes and Adult Basic Education for reading, writing and math classes that will be held this summer at various times and locations throughout Harford County.

Classes will meet two mornings or evenings a week for three hours per session. Volunteers may choose to serve in one or both sessions each week.

Farm Fair seeks groups to help at summer event

The Harford County Farm Fair will be held July 29 through Aug. 1 at the Harford County Equestrian Center off North Tollgate Road in Bel Air.

Groups can participate by helping with the Kid Way activities, while also earning money for their organizations, which can raise up to $460 a day. Staff is needed Thursday through Sunday.

Baltic studies educator to present speech at HCC

Viktor Trasberg, director of the Baltic Studies Program at the University of Tartu, Estonia, will speak on "From Soviet Union to European Union" at 5 p.m. May 27 at Harford Community College's Student Center, Room 243.

Trasberg holds a doctoral degree in economics from the Latvian Academy of Sciences and a master's degree from Moscow State University. He has taught at the University of Tartu since 1984; he also taught courses at York University in Canada.

HCC offers science camp for middle school pupils

Harford Community College is offering a two-week summer science and environmental studies program for pupils entering grades six through eight.

"Water, Water Everywhere" will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 21 to July 2 on the HCC campus. Extended day classes are available for 1 1/2 hours before and after camp. The course will cover biological monitoring and stream ecology. Students will learn about the Save Our Streams organization.
