Today's NCAA men's games

May 15, 2004|By Jeff Zrebiec

Division I first round

Providence (9-7) at No. 1 Johns Hopkins (11-1)

Site: Homewood Field

Time: 1 p.m.

Outlook: These teams, which have never met, couldn't be on more opposite ends of the lacrosse spectrum. Johns Hopkins, the tournament's top seed for the third year in a row, is making its 33rd consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, having won 42 national championships, including seven NCAA crowns. The Blue Jays will be playing their 76th tournament game; Providence will play its first after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament. Providence faceoff man Mark Rotella and goalie Andrew McMinn are among the nation's leaders at their positions.

Army (10-4) at No. 3 Maryland (12-2)

Site: Byrd Stadium, College Park

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Eleven years ago today, the Black Knights and Terrapins last met in an NCAA first-round game: Army won, 15-11, in West Point. The Knights eked out an at-large bid to this year's postseason after failing to make the Patriot League tournament. The game's marquee matchup will pit Army attackmen Jim Wagner, John Walker and Jeff Bryan - all in the top 10 in the nation in scoring - against Maryland's defense, considered one of the country's best units. Few players are hotter than Maryland attackman Joe Walters, the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year who has 11 hat tricks in 14 games.
